Hi there! My name's Nicholas Garbaty, and

I’m an idea translator and video journalist.

What does that mean? Well, through my education and career as a journalist, I've become adept at researching and writing in a way that acknowledges context, pinpoints significance and preserves intent. Whether I'm by myself or working on a team,

I ensure ideas transition smoothly from one person to another while retaining and appreciating their meaning and nuance.

I'm also a skilled video producer who's had roles in every part of the production process, from interviewing, to filming, to animation, to editing and color grading. I’ve worked for big names like Vox, TEGNA, Quartz and AJ+, among others, and through it all I learned how to create engaging visual stories, how to be dynamic and intentional, and what it takes to build a project from scratch and turn it into a full-blown production, even while under the constraints of budget, deadline and a compact team. These experiences have informed my vocation, and thus

My mission is to inform the public on the ways media influence our lives and to hold to account the people who wield media, from politicians to celebrities to journalists ourselves.

On a personal note, I’m also a huge nerd. I’m often in the audience on Twitch, I love Marvel and DC and I play a lot of video games (currently Final Fantasy XIV and Baldur’s Gate 3). I also play tabletop games like Dungeons and Dragons and Magic: The Gathering, plus a whole slew of other board games. And I like staying on top of pop culture trends, whether that’s the latest HBO show or up-and-coming music artist.

Whether at a media organization or production company, I’m a great asset to have. Anyone who needs not just a video journalist, but also an idea translator in Washington, D.C. or the east coast should feel free to get in touch.
